Scandium metal is a soft metallic transition metal, it has a silvery-white appearance in its elemental form which oxidizes to yellow or pinkish when exposed to air. Scandium metal can react with water to produce hydrogen gas and dissolve in many acids.


Producing Methods:

Distillation and reduction are two major prodcuing method of scandium metal. Heating scandium fluoride (ScF3) with calcium metal will get pure scandium, as this reduction formula shows: 2ScF3 + 3Ca = 3CaF2 + 2Sc. The distillation method is by heating pure metal in high tempereature vaccum furnace to get scandium evaporant. The distilled scandium has better quality than the reduced one. The distilled scandium is dendritic like a crystal of metallic luster. However, the reduced one is broken into irregular pieces. Scandium metal powder is milled from high purity scandium metal under strict conditions.


Application:

Scandium metal is lightweight, but the melting point is much higher than aluminum. It could replace aluminum to make various aircraft. It is a raw material for high-melting alloy, for example Al-Sc alloy, Mg-Sc alloy, Sc-Ti alloy. It can apply to a space shuttle, rocket, and other high-end purposes. Except these, scandium is additive for steel, tungsten, and chromium alloy. The main application by volume is aluminum-scandium alloys for the aerospace industry and sports equipment, including sports (bikes, baseball bats, etc.) that rely on high-performance materials. It has been shown to reduce solidification cracking during the welding of high strength aluminum alloys. Scandium plays a vital role in the third-generation Illuminant that is a scandium sodium lamp. It is a kind of metal halide lamp that fills with sodium iodide and scandium iodide and, simultaneously, scandium and sodium foil in the lights. Scandium is used in household equipment such as color televisions, fluorescent lights, energy-saving lights, and glasses. Scandium metal is the best barrier metal in metal-insulator-semiconductor silicon photocell and solar cells. A growing application of scandium is on electric devicves. When doping AlN with Scandium (Sc), it can significantly improve piezoelectric performance on 5G RF chips. Other uses of scandium is also developing such as fingerprint sensor, high SNR microphone, etc.

Where is HAMM factory located?

How is HAMM’s quality control?

HAMM applys rigous and costly process control during producing. We test and analysize every batch of our product from every process, each KG scandium product go through more than 15 times tests to ensure all impurities are controlled in extremely low level.


What’s your analysis methods you use on your product?

We have ICP-OES/ICP-MAS to analyse impurities, GDMS also availbale if needed. For gases, we uses LECO’s instrument to monitor C,N,O.


What can be scandium metal powder used for?

- To produce scandium alloy: scandium aluminum alloys, the main application of scandium is in aluminum-scandium alloys for minor aerospace industry components. The common content is 2% scandium. The addition of scandium to aluminum limits an excessive grain growth that occurs in the heat-affected zone of welded aluminum components. Another application is scandium-aluminum alloys can be used in some sports equipment, including baseball bats, lacrosse sticks, as well as bicycle frames and related components.

- To produce other compounds: like employed in solid-state synthesis of unusual clusters, Sc19Br28Z4, (Z=Mn, Fe, Ru or Os). These clusters are of interest for their structure and magnetic properties.

Is scandium posionous?

Scandium is not thought to be poisonous, but due to limited testing on live animals, it should be handled carefully in all of its compounds.


Is scandium used in medicine?

Scandium radionuclides have been identified in the late 1990s as promising for nuclear medicine applications, but have been set aside for about 20 years. Among the different isotopes of scandium, Sc-43 and Sc-44 are interesting for positron emission tomography imaging, whereas Sc-47 is interesting for therapy.
